LOUDOUN BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION
Fall Tasks

Here are a few suggested tasks for September.
  1. Consider fall requeening.
  2. Check entrances for foraging activity. Add mouse protection.
  3. Combine disease-free, weak colonies with stronger ones, or requeen if necessary.
  4. Check for adequate room: add supers if less than two full super of combs available for fall flow honey storage.
  5. Examine 3 combs in brood nest for disease.
  6. Check for varroa mites.
  7. Make sure the hive has sufficient nectar to support the brood. If not, start a feeding program.
  8. Remove fall crop, leaving 65-75 pounds of honey for winter.
  9. All harvested honey should be removed before any treatment program begins.
  10. Make sure colonies have at least two combs with open pollen in bottom brood nest chamber and one full comb of stored pollen covered with honey in middle of upper brood chamber. They will need this in late winter and early spring.
  11. Remove queen excluders.
